IUI Fertility Treatment to Support Natural Pregnancy

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) supports natural fertilisation for couples experiencing difficulty conceiving. It is a MINIMALLY INVASIVE fertility treatment used to improve the chances of pregnancy. It works by placing healthy, active sperm closer to the egg at the right time, making it easier for fertilisation to happen naturally. For many couples facing difficulty conceiving, IUI treatment offers a hopeful first step before more advanced treatments.

IUI Procedure

At your appointment, Dr Manmeet Batra will first assess your medical history, cycle details and investigation reports. If IUI is medically suitable, your cycle is planned accordingly, and the IUI process is completed using the steps listed below:

1. Ovulation Tracking

Each cycle begins with monitoring the ovaries to identify the exact time of ovulation. Follicle development is monitored through ultrasound imaging and hormone testing to identify the most fertile period of the cycle. Some patients may receive ovulation-inducing medication to support the release of a mature egg.

2. Semen Sample Collection

A semen sample is collected from the partner or obtained from a donor, depending on the treatment plan. The sample is provided in a sterile container and promptly transferred to the laboratory to ensure accurate testing, optimal handling, and timely preparation for insemination.

3. Laboratory Sperm Preparation

The collected semen undergoes a specialised washing procedure in the laboratory. This process separates motile, healthy sperm from non-motile cells and debris, resulting in a concentrated sample with improved quality. The prepared sperm is then ready for safe and precise intrauterine placement.

4. Insemination Procedure

During the fertile window, the prepared sperm is gently inserted into the uterus using a thin, flexible catheter. The procedure is brief, generally painless, and does not require anaesthesia. Patients can return to normal activities soon after, as no recovery time is typically needed.

5. Post-Procedure Care

Mild cramping or minimal spotting may occur after insemination and is considered normal. Some patients are prescribed progesterone to support the uterine lining. Routine daily activities can be continued as usual, with no specific restrictions unless medically advised.

6. Two-Week Waiting Period

After the procedure, there is a gap of roughly fourteen days before results can be checked. Some patients may notice mild symptoms, while others may not experience any changes. Both responses are common, as symptoms are often influenced by progesterone or natural hormonal patterns rather than early pregnancy.

7. Pregnancy Confirmation

Approximately two weeks after the insemination, a beta hCG test is conducted to check for a pregnancy response. This test provides the most reliable result, as home pregnancy tests may show inaccurate readings due to medications or early hormonal fluctuations during the cycle.

IUI Success Symptoms Day By Day

Many patients closely observe their bodies for early signs that the IUI treatment may have worked. It is important to understand that symptoms vary from person to person, and some women may notice changes while others feel nothing at all. Both situations are normal. The following timeline highlights common experiences reported by patients in the two weeks after an IUI procedure:

Day 1–3 After IUI

The uterus was just accessed with a catheter, so mild discomfort is normal. You may experience these symptoms:

  • Mild cramping
  • Light spotting (implantation has NOT happened yet)
  • Slight bloating
  • Feeling normal is also very common.

Day 4–6 After IUI

The embryo has not implanted yet. It is still travelling in the tubes. Usually, there are no strong symptoms; however, you might experience:

  • Mild heaviness or pelvic fullness
  • Tiredness
  • Light breast sensitivity (often from progesterone)

Day 6–10 After IUI (Possible Implantation Window)

This is the period where implantation may happen. Possible symptoms:

  • Mild implantation cramps
  • Very light spotting (pink/brown)
  • Increased bloating
  • Heightened smell sensitivity
  • Warmth or heaviness in the lower abdomen
  • Breast tenderness increases
  • Low energy or fatigue

Many patients feel no symptoms at all — which is also normal.

Day 10–12 After IUI

Now, hormonal changes may begin. Possible symptoms:

  • Increased breast tenderness
  • Slight nausea in some cases
  • More frequent urination
  • Mood shifts
  • Food aversions or cravings
  • Basal body temperature stays slightly higher (if tracking)

If using an HCG trigger, avoid home pregnancy tests at this stage because results may be false-positive.

Day 12–14 After IUI

It’s the reliable pregnancy symptoms after the IUI window. Possible symptoms:

  • Stronger breast tenderness
  • Feeling unusually tired
  • Light cramping similar to period cramps
  • Sensitive smell or taste
  • Darker nipples or more visible breast veins
  • White or creamy cervical discharge
  • Missed period (important sign)

A blood test (beta hCG) around Day 14 gives the most accurate result.

Important Note

Progesterone medication can mimic pregnancy symptoms, and the absence of symptoms does not indicate an unsuccessful cycle. Each patient’s body responds differently, and medical confirmation is essential before drawing conclusions.
