Paternal Lymphocyte Immunisation (PLI) is an immunotherapy used for women who have experienced recurrent miscarriage and IVF failures, where no clear cause has been found. Your IVF doctor recommends PLI if you have:
- Repeated miscarriages with no genetic or anatomical reason.
- Recurrent IVF failures, especially where embryo quality is good.
- A history suggesting the immune system may be playing a role in pregnancy loss.
- Concerns about implantation issues in otherwise healthy embryos.
How the Paternal Lymphocyte Immunisation (PLI) Treatment Works?
The father’s white blood cells (lymphocytes) are collected, processed safely in a laboratory, and then injected into the mother’s arm. These cells act like a gentle “immune signal,” helping the mother’s body build tolerance towards the embryo, which carries paternal genes. The procedure is simple, usually done in a series of sessions, and supervised by Dr Manmeet Batra.
When to Consider PLI for Recurrent Miscarriage and IVF Failure
Many of our patients have questions like, “Can IVF help with recurrent miscarriage?”PLI does not replace IVF or other fertility treatments. Instead, it is often used alongside them to improve the chances of implantation and reduce the risk of miscarriage in women who have struggled repeatedly.
It is considered when:
- Multiple miscarriages have occurred.
- IVF has failed more than once.
- All basic test reports show normal results.
