Every embryo naturally carries a set number of chromosomes. If this number is incorrect, the embryo may not implant or may lead to an early miscarriage. PGT-A, also known as PGS, is a chromosomal screening performed on embryos during IVF. It does not change or modify the embryo in any way.
The purpose of the PGT-A test is to identify whether an embryo has the correct number of chromosomes before it is considered for transfer. In this test, a few cells from the embryo are used to understand whether its chromosome count is euploid or aneuploid.
When PGT-A Is Clinically Advised
For patients who have been trying to conceive for a long time, Preimplantation Genetic Testing can be incredibly valuable. Dr Manmeet Batra recommends PGT-A in situations where genetic concerns may affect the pregnancy outcome. This includes women in their mid-30s and above, couples who have experienced repeated IVF failures or recurrent miscarriages, or those who want to minimise the risk of passing on chromosomal abnormalities.
